"Critique Paper"
The article “The Digital Divide: The Challenge of Technology and Equity” is all about digital divide which is the gap separating those individuals who have access to new forms of information technology from those who do not and technologies influence to people and also the scope/extent covered by people who have internet access. Information technology has influenced people in different ways. To think that nowadays people are more attached with their phones, laptops or computers. Technology had been a really big help in our daily lives, it helps us make life easier. From the article itself, we use e-mails and internet to communicate with our friends, family and even business associates around and across the world without taking the effort of making letters and snail mailing it will take so much time to even send and receive the message from each other. But unfortunately not all of us can afford or is even updated by technology, especially people who are from rural areas. If so, how are they going to manage coping up with the increasing knowledge and skill from the technology?
The article seeks to address why having access in technologies and internet is important to promote equality across diverse groups of people all over the world. The problem being addressed is whether technology will be seen as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. It is clear from the article that technology has a really big impact in our society. In fact the author started the article with the statement of what the real meaning of information technology is, why and how it affects/influence people today. The article is overloaded with the information about the percentages of different key points that connects with the argument. It’s truly right that not all people around the world could afford buying computers and other equipment that should be used to help them develop their knowledge and skills from the internet.
However, regarding the information/investigation indicted the tools of the texts, reports, and studies does not dispute the basic facts gathered in the recent empirical studies of computer usage and internet access. There is no basis in where the information came from, like sources and evidences that the statements/text, reports and studies are true or not. I wish that the author should’ve indicated them so that the argument would be classified as reliable and not just an opinion/bluff. And also it is obvious on how technology affect our lives especially now that we are in the age of evolving to the future, At a time when nearly everyone seems to be on the internet all the time, a few demographic groups appear to be permanently stuck in the digital dark ages. In conclusion, more work should be done in the future demonstrating how social media is indeed productive, meaningful and important and not a waste of time. But we cannot begin this work until we stop manufacturing divides and start recognizing all Internet users as equally and fully human.
